New IB DP Physics Syllabus

IB Physics — Score higher by mastering data + uncertainties + examiner-style reasoning (not “more problems”).

Times Edu trains Physics the way IB assesses it: concept → model → data/uncertainty → justified conclusion → clean communication under time pressure—so you stop losing marks on method, units, graphs, and evaluation.

Choose SL vs HL

Standard Level (SL)

Teaching Hours 150 Hours
Ext. Assessment 3 Hours

Focuses on core concepts and fundamental applications.

Higher Level (HL)

Teaching Hours 240 Hours
Ext. Assessment 4.5 Hours

Includes additional higher-level topics and more complex mathematical demands.

Assessment Overview

Paper 1

36% (SL) / 36% (HL)
  • 1A: Multiple-choice questions.
  • 1B: Data-based questions focusing on analysis and uncertainty.
  • No calculators for 1A? Check new guide. (Calc allowed for all now in new syllabus).

Paper 2

44% (SL) / 44% (HL)
  • Short-answer questions.
  • Extended-response questions.
  • Requires deep conceptual linking (one concept used throughout extended response).

Internal Assessment

20% (SL) / 20% (HL)
  • Scientific Investigation.
  • 10 hours duration.
  • Assessed on Design, Analysis, Conclusion, and Evaluation.

Content Map (Organizing Themes A–E)

A

Space, Time & Motion

Kinematics, Forces, Momentum, Rigid body mechanics (HL), Relativity (HL option contexts).

B

The Particulate Nature of Matter

Thermal physics, Greenhouse effect, Gas laws, Thermodynamics (HL).

C

Wave Behaviour

SHM, Traveling waves, Standing waves, Interference, Doppler effect (HL).

D

Fields

Gravitational fields, Electrostatic fields, Magnetic fields, Induction (HL).

E

Times Edu Strategy Playbook

How our students gain marks fast.

A) Paper 1A (MCQ) — Fastest Score Gains

Strategies tailored for speed and trap-avoidance.

  • bolt Predict-first: Solve before looking at options.
  • bolt Eliminate: Cross out physical impossibilities.
  • bolt Timed Blocks: Practice in 10-minute clusters.

B) Paper 1B (Data Analysis)

Where many students leak marks unnecessarily.

  • trending_up Routine: Extract → Trend/Anomaly → Calculate.
  • trending_up Uncertainty Language: Specific phrasing for errors.
  • trending_up Mark Protection: Always justify the conclusion.

C) Paper 2 (Short + Extended)

Method marks and structured reasoning.

  • edit_document Setup Templates: Standard starts for common questions.
  • edit_document Extended-Response Frame: Logical flow.
  • edit_document Booklet Navigation: Find formulas fast.

D) IA Scientific Investigation

Score high with design and evaluation.

  • science Tight RQ: Testable and specific.
  • science Method: Robust enough to generate valid data.
  • science Evaluation: Critical analysis of limitations.

FAQ — IB Physics (SL/HL)

What is the difference between the new and old syllabus? expand_more

The new syllabus places a heavier emphasis on data analysis in Paper 1B and has removed the Options (Astro, Engineering, etc.) as separate papers, integrating them into the core topics. Calculators are now allowed in Paper 1.

Do you support students with their Internal Assessment? expand_more

Yes. We provide guidance on selecting a robust research question, refining the methodology, and ensuring the evaluation criteria are met. We do not write the IA for you, but we coach you on the physics.

Is the trial class really free? expand_more

Yes, the first trial class is completely free with no obligation, allowing you to experience our teaching style.

How often are the classes? expand_more

Most students attend once or twice a week depending on their specific needs and the proximity to exams.
